Understanding the Science Behind Derma Rollers

Understanding the Science Behind Derma Rollers

Microneedling, initially used as a treatment for skin issues, has been around for about 25 years. It started with a technique called “subcision,” where doctors used a needle under the skin to treat scars. Modern microneedling uses small needles between 0.25mm - 2mm to create tiny wounds on the skin's surface.

These tiny wounds help break up scar tissue and trigger the skin's natural healing processes, which can improve scars, wrinkles, dark spots, and acne, and depending on the area, help improve hair loss conditions.

Although there are several effective treatments and methods for reversing hair loss in men in recent times, one of the most promising treatments backed by scientific research is microneedling. In recent years, microneedling has become a popular treatment for many skin conditions and hair loss. Research has shown that microneedling can significantly increase hair growth. For instance, using microneedling alone can increase hair count more effectively than using the hair growth treatment minoxidil. Studies also suggest that extending the overall duration of microneedling treatment and spacing out the sessions may further improve hair growth.

Derma rollers have also become increasingly popular among women seeking to enhance their skin's appearance and address various dermatological issues. These handheld devices, equipped with tiny needles, are rolled over the skin to create micro-injuries, stimulating the body's natural healing process.

Microneedling also boosts collagen and elastin production, essential proteins for maintaining firm, youthful skin. Additionally, derma rolling can enhance the absorption of skincare products, making treatments more effective. Regular use of derma rollers has been shown to lead to smoother, brighter, and more resilient skin, making it a valuable tool in modern skincare routines.

Hair Growth Improvement in Men Using Derma Rollers

As shown in the scientific study from the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. Volume 21. Issue (JCDV), studies show promising results:

Through tests and trials, it has come to be known that in comparison to other conventional methods for hair growth (having a growth factor of approximately 10 hairs/cm2 of scalp), microneedling therapy alone significantly increased total hair count, by a factor of 12 hairs / cm2 of scalp.

Along with these improvements, studies shows that derma rolling helps considerably in the increase of blood flow to the scalp and beard, also providing follicles with oxygen and collagen. Several studies have demonstrated that using a derma roller in combination with topical treatments like minoxidil can significantly improve hair growth in men with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness). For instance, one study showed that men using both minoxidil and a derma roller experienced a 400% greater increase in hair count compared to those using Minoxidil alone (Medihair).

Another study reported that 82% of participants who combined derma rolling with hair-growing products, saw more than a 50% improvement in hair growth, compared to just 5% of those using only minoxidil (HairScience). These results suggest that the mechanical stimulation from microneedling enhances the absorption and effectiveness of hair-growing products, leading to significantly better hair growth outcomes.

Skin Improvement in Women Using Derma Rollers

For skin rejuvenation, derma rolling has shown promising results in improving various dermatological conditions in women, including wrinkles, scars, and hyperpigmentation. Clinical studies indicate that microneedling can lead to a significant improvement in skin texture and appearance.

Recent studies found that derma rolling improved skin texture after several sessions. Additionally, it is effective in breaking down scar tissue and stimulating collagen production, which helps in reducing the appearance of scars and improving overall skin elasticity (MindBodygreen) (MDPI).

Furthermore, the benefits of derma rolling extend beyond just surface improvements. This technique has been found to be particularly effective in treating hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone, offering a non-invasive solution for those seeking to achieve a more uniform complexion. The controlled micro-injuries also promote better blood circulation, which can enhance the skin's overall health and vitality. For women dealing with stretch marks, derma rolling provides a promising option to reduce their visibility by encouraging the regeneration of new skin cells. Importantly, the size of the needles can be tailored to specific skin concerns, making the treatment customizable and versatile. With proper sterilization and technique, derma rolling is a safe procedure that can be done in the comfort of one's home.

Overall, the use of derma rollers has been validated by numerous studies for skin improvement in men & women, showcasing its versatility and effectiveness as a therapeutic tool.
